What "perfect maze" means, and why it matters

A perfect maze has exactly one path between any two points — one way in, one way out, no loops and no sealed-off pockets. That is what makes it satisfying to solve and what makes the answer key correct: there is exactly one route to draw. A maze with a loop has two routes, so the printed solution can look wrong to a solver who found the other; a maze with a sealed-off pocket looks like a printing error.

Puzzle Press carves each maze as a spanning tree of the grid, which is perfect by definition. Entrance top-left, exit bottom-right, and the solution is the unique path between them — printed at the back as a wide grey corridor over the maze, easy to read at 6 to a page.

Grades

LevelGridSize
Easy15 × 15225 cells, the widest corridors
Medium21 × 21441 cells
Hard29 × 29841 cells
Expert39 × 391,521 cells, the narrowest corridors
GradedEasy at the front through expert at the back, level printed on each maze

Each maze fills the page's live area, so the cell size follows the trim: 8.5 × 11 gives the biggest cells, at the cost of KDP's large-trim print rate. 6 × 9 keeps the flat printing rate.

Measured on 2,000 mazes

On 22 October 2026 we generated 500 mazes at each grade and checked every one. All 2,000 were perfect: every cell reachable, and exactly one route from entrance to exit.

GradeRoute, shortest / middle / longestMiddle share of the gridDead ends, middleTurns on the route, middle
Easy37 / 93 / 179 cells41%2458
Medium57 / 159 / 309 cells36%46102
Hard105 / 287 / 537 cells34%87181
Expert165 / 477 / 833 cells31%155306

Two things follow. First, grid size is not the whole of difficulty: the longest easy maze had a longer route (179 cells) than the shortest hard one (105). Second, these mazes are carved by a random walk that keeps going until it has nowhere new to go, then backs up to the last fork. That makes long winding corridors: about one cell in ten is a dead end, at every grade. Every maze took under 2 ms to make.

Maze books for children

If the book is for children, say the age range in the title and grade the book so the first mazes are the easiest. Graded puts easy at the front. Within a grade, though, the route length varies a lot (measured below), so look through the preview: if a maze near the front looks too long for its place, press Reshuffle. It remakes the whole book, every maze at once, so look through the new one too.

The rules every KDP interior has to meet

Page size equal to the trim, margins that grow with the page count, fonts embedded, 24 to 828 pages and an even count, a cover whose spine width is page count × paper thickness with nothing added. The tool lays every book out to these; if you would rather know them yourself, they are all in the guide, with the numbers.
